Located on the Via Podensis, one of the routes to Santiago de Compostela, this castle is very old: it is mentioned as early as the 12th century and a fortress surely existed before.
During the year 1764, the castle of Saint-Alban became one of the rallying points to organize the battues aiming to eliminate the Beast of Gévaudan.
This castle became a psychiatric hospital in 1821, with the arrival of Joseph Tissot, called Brother Hilarion, whose vocation was to serve the insane. The hospital was renowned for the quality of its care
The castle currently houses the tourist office which also hosts temporary exhibitions and shows in the beautiful courtyard. However, the interior of the castle cannot be visited.
It is possible to visit the castle outside with a commentary for groups. Access is only possible through the courtyard of the castle.
