BOIS A L'EST DE VIOLOT

This ZNIEFF is part of the Bois Communaux et de Plémont ZNIEFF, which includes part of the Forêt Domaniale de Bussières-les-Belmont and its neighboring woods.

For nature lovers:
This ensemble is established on the sandstone plateaus of the Apance-Amance natural region (south-east of Haute-Marne) and covers various forest types, from acidiphile to calcicole and from dry to very hydromorphic, settled on the infra-Lias and Trias formations of the south-eastern end of the Paris Basin.

Vegetation:
The dominant forest types are mesotrophic oak-charyma-beech, alder-oak along streams, acidocline oak-beech and sphagnum alder at springs. Sphagnum mosses, which are rare in Haute-Marne, are found in seepages on acidic soils. The main species of interest are winter horsetail, royal fern and spiked blechnum (two ferns that are very rare in Haute-Marne), purple epipactis (an uncommon orchid), forest lysimachia (a mountain species) and others.

Fauna:
The massif is a nesting or feeding ground for numerous birds (some forty species, more than half of which are protected), an amphibian, the yellow-bellied sounder, listed as a vulnerable species on the French Red List of Fauna, fully protected in France since 1993 and in Europe (Habitats Directive and Bern Convention), and various protected mammals (such as the wildcat).
