Musée des Spahis

This place presents the history and importance of the Spahis in French military history. Created on the initiative of the Association amicale des Spahis, the Spahis Museum of La Horgne (Ardennes) shows the importance of the North African troops, and more particularly the Spahis, in French military history. Its location is emblematic. In the village of La Horgne, between the 13th and 15th May 1940, the 3rd Brigade of mounted Spahis held the 1st German armoured division of Gudérian under arrest. The visit is structured around six themes: the horse, man's companion, to life and death; the men making up the Spahis regiments, of different origins, culture and faith; the sociability of the Spahis who forged an exemplary community; the Ardennes in 1940 and the beginning of the Second World War; the battle of La Horgne, a dramatic but symbolic episode of the missions carried out; the memory and recognition of the sacrifice of these soldiers. The museum presents in particular the battle and ceremonial outfits of the Spahis, an officer's saddle, numerous objects from the daily life of the Spahis, armaments and decorations. General Gudérian and the Germans will pay a vibrant tribute to their adversaries by writing that "if these battles were the most deadly, they will also remain the most glorious of the entire western campaign" Museum of an unrealistic battle, that of May 15, 1940: Battle of La Horgne, 700 Spahis on horseback, 5 hours of combat delivered to the German tanks ... The Spahis museum will take you into the world of these extraordinary men, with a tragic destiny. In the village of La Horgne, you will also find an interpretation trail of the battle, a commemorative monument and a military cemetery where Christian and Muslim graves are gathered.
