Montieramey

Description

Montiéramey owes its name to the abbey that was founded by Arremar in the 9th century. This abbey took the name of its founder on his death Montier d'Arremare, then Montiéramey. It preserves a singular hillside landscape cultivated in orchards. Moreover, one can observe a pleasant view of the Lac d'Orient from the Côte aux Chats.

A bit of geography: Commune of Montiéramey + hamlet Le Ménilot 436 inhabitants in 1790 - 405 inhabitants in 1999 Nickname of the inhabitants: the "Voleux d'Paissiaux" 673 hectares in surface area Wet agricultural region: Champagne wetlands Geographical region: Southern forests of the Champagne region.

A bit of history: The prosperity of the local economy was ensured for many years by the exploitation of green sands. The railway installations at the station, which supplied the ironworks with green sands, bear witness to this prosperity. This sand is indispensable for casting parts. It contains hard parts of blocks or benches that were extracted to be used in construction. In addition to this exploitation, the economic activity was flourishing, until these last years, thanks to its dairy. The milk was collected in the Vallée de la Barse as far as Vendeuvre to be pasteurized and sent by rail to Paris. These daily shipments could reach up to 7000 litres.

Natural heritage: whether private or communal, the cultivated hillside orchards are privileged living places for the Hoopoe, the Torcol anteater, certain orchids, the autumn Colchicum, and some species of bats? It is in this commune that the Owl was last seen on the Park's territory a few years ago.

Cultural heritage: church dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin: it is the former monastic church and has been classified as a "Historic Monument" since 1840. It has a Latin cross plan and is fully vaulted. Its nave dates from the 12th century and its transept from the 16th century. It has very beautiful stained glass windows from the 16th century, such as that of the "Martyrdom of Sebastian". A colossal altarpiece with twisted columns, sculpted by Gérard Gaultier, reinforces the imposing aspect of the ensemble. Finally, no less than sixteen representations of Mary appear in this church, the most original of which is the one painted by Jean Nicot on a cloud of smoke. Remains of the abbey of Montiéramey founded by the priest Arremar: they are still visible in the state in which it was built in the 18th century. What remains is the abbey house, the cope of Montiéramey, the abbot's ceremonial mantle decorated with 49 four-lobed medallions representing the Virgin and the saints of the "Golden Legend". This rare piece is today kept in the Treasure of the Cathedral of Troyes.
Château Saint-Martin, built on the site of a barn dependent on the abbey.
