Located in the center of the village, this museum, housed in an old barn that has been completely refurbished, retraces the fabulous history of Savonnières stone quarrying by displaying the many tools used by quarrymen to extract the stone: picks, needles, spears, wedges and more.
Objects, photographs, videos and exhibits complete the discovery of this traditional activity in the Saulx valley.
Savonnières stone, of international renown, was used in traditional construction as well as in the fine Renaissance mansions of Bar-le-Duc and the Barrois region. A limestone type, its slight iron oxide content gives it a blond color. The presence of this ferrous oxide gave rise to strong foundry activity in the Saulx valley. Very fine-grained and easy to cut, Savonnière stone has been used for centuries for building and sculpture, including the Château de Mercy south of Metz.
Les Amis de la Pierre is an association of enthusiasts who warmly welcome you to discover this extraordinarily beautiful stone at two discovery sites: the Maison de la Pierre and the Rinval quarry in Brauvilliers.
Open from June to October, on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month.
Combined visit to Rinval quarry + Maison de Pierre = 7 ? / person.
