In the 3rd century, the Romans built a thick wall 800m long to protect themselves from Alamanni and Frankish invasions. Augustomagus then retreated into a 6-hectare castrum to ensure the safety of the administration and its inhabitants: the Sulbanectes.
Built using the Roman technique of alternating stone and brick to ensure strength, the Senlis wall is one of the few constructions of this type to have been preserved almost in its entirety in France. You can still admire 16 of the original 30 towers.
Part of the wall is hidden in private property. Don't miss the best viewpoints of the wall:
- In the Jardin du Roy, with its stone and brick towers,
- In the Parc du Château Royal, where the wall marks the boundary,
- Rue de la Treille with the "Fausse Porte", an opening in the wall, - Jardin de l'évêché, rue aux Flageards where it was partly demolished to make way for the cathedral, and where the existing part has been converted into a room to house the works of the Musée d'Art et d'Archéologie
- When passing through Square Vernet, look out for the bas-relief of a man on the staircase wall
-Rue de Villevert, where the wall has been demolished to allow the passage of carts, horses and now cars.
The base of the wall is supported by reused materials (columns, statues, etc.). You can discover these foundations in situ at the Musée d?Art et d?Archéologie, revealing exceptional elements from destroyed monuments, dry-assembled to a height of 3 or 4 courses.
