In the 3rd century, to protect themselves from the Alamanni and Frankish invasions, the Romans built a thick wall 800m long. Augustomagus then retreated into a 6-hectare castrum to ensure the safety of the administration and its inhabitants: the Sulbanectes. Built according to the Roman technique using the alternation of stones and bricks to ensure its solidity, the wall of Senlis is one of the rare constructions of this type, preserved in its almost totality in France. You can still admire 16 of the 30 original towers. A part of this wall is hidden in private properties. Don't miss the best viewpoints on the wall: - At the Jardin du Roy with the stone and brick towers, - In the Park of the Royal Castle where the wall delimits its enclosure, - Rue de la Treille with the "Fausse Porte", an opening in the wall, - The Garden of the Bishopric, rue aux Flageards where it was partly destroyed to make way for the cathedral and where the existing part was converted into a room to receive the works of the Museum of Art and Archaeology - When you pass through the Vernet square, look carefully so as not to miss the statue of a little man in the wall - rue de Villevert where the wall was destroyed to allow the passage of carts, horses and now cars The base of the wall is supported by reused materials (columns, statues...). You can discover in situ these foundations at the Museum of Art and Archaeology revealing exceptional elements, coming from destroyed monuments, dry assembled on a height of 3 or 4 courses.
