Created in the 11th century by the first Capetians, the original castle was enlarged by King Philip the Fair, then restored and embellished by Duke Louis I of Orleans in the late 14th century. Subsequently abandoned by the lords, the medieval castle was partly razed and rebuilt, from the middle of the 17th to the beginning of the 18th century: it became, thanks to the family of Phelypeaux de la Vrillière, a "Little Versailles" with magnificent French gardens. Bought by the Duke of Penthièvre in 1784, the castle, richly furnished and decorated with works of art, was to shine with its last lights.
