The Rocher des Portes is also called the Île aux Oiseaux because of the large colony of seabirds that nest there, mainly cormorants, gulls and other seabirds.
Cormorants and seagulls cover the rock with their white droppings , giving the rock a whitewashed appearance.
The islet is located directly on the path and is a striking landmark on the hike from Bonne Terrasse to Cap Camarat or L'Escalet. Swimmers can sometimes get close, but it is rocky and waves make landing challenging. Furthermore, there are no flat sections.
