Le Rocher des Portes est aussi appelé l' Île aux Oiseaux en raison de l'importante colonie d'oiseaux marins qui y nichent, principalement des cormorans, des goélands et autres oiseaux marins.
Les cormorans et les mouettes recouvrent le rocher de leurs excréments blancs , donnant au rocher un aspect blanchi à la chaux.
L'îlot est situé directement sur le sentier et constitue un point de repère remarquable sur la randonnée de Bonne Terrasse à Cap Camarat ou L'Escalet. Les nageurs peuvent parfois s'en approcher, mais l'îlot est rocheux et les vagues rendent l'atterrissage difficile. De plus, il n'y a pas de zones plates.
