Musée de l'Annonciade - Saint-Tropez

The museum is housed in a 16th-century chapel , originally built around 1548 by the Brotherhood of the White Penitents.

During the French Revolution, the chapel was expropriated and later used as a shipyard and storage space. Beginning in 1922 , it became one of the first museums of modern art in France. In 1937, patron Georges Grammont began furnishing the upper floor, which officially opened in 1955 with 56 works. Architect Louis Süe then gave the space a modern, museum-like design.

The compact collection is of high quality and visually accessible.

The collection includes masters of the French avant-garde between circa 1890 and 1950 , such as Paul Signac, Henri Matisse, Albert Marquet, Georges Seurat, Édouard Vuillard, Pierre Bonnard, André Derain, Georges Braque, Kees van Dongen, Maurice Denis and Félix Vallotton .

Works belong to the well-known art movements: pointillism, Fauvism, and the Nabis movement . The paintings capture the unique Provençal light and vibrant colors.

Signac made Saint-Tropez famous among artists when he arrived in 1892 with his yacht L'Olympia , subsequently inviting local artists to settle there. He transformed Saint-Tropez into a breeding ground for avant-garde art. Several of his works are on display in the museum, including iconic pieces such as L'Orage and Le quai à Saint-Tropez .
