French Flanders

French Flanders, located in the far northwest of France, is a border region where Flemish and French cultures merge. Historically, it belonged to the old County of Flanders, which stretched to the River Aa and even included Lille. For centuries, the area was a plaything of European powers: French kings such as Louis XIV conquered the region in the 17th century, definitively separating French Flanders from the Southern Netherlands after the Peace of Utrecht in 1713. As a result of this annexation, the region gradually became Frenchified, losing its political, but not its cultural, ties with the Flemish heartland. What is striking is the tenacity with which age-old Flemish customs, architecture and dialects endure alongside French life. The villages and towns of French Flanders boast picturesque beguinages, belfries and brick hall houses that bear witness to a long Flemish presence. The landscape is varied: vast polders reach all the way to the coast, while the Houtland (Houtland) gently undulates with wooded hills and fertile agricultural lands. Cities like Dunkirk, Sint-Winoksbergen, and Belle exude an atmosphere reminiscent of Flanders, but with a French touch. The region is also unique linguistically; Flemish dialects still resonate here, despite centuries of French language policy. French Flanders is thus a fascinating region where borders blur, history remains tangible, and Flemish heritage lives on amidst French culture.
