Description by the author

We traveled this route on 06/09/2024

We rode along the Lure by the side of Saint-Étienne-Les-Orgues and it was a good decision. The Lure is very popular among cyclists. If one wants a quiet car and/or motorcycle trip, it is best to leave early.

"Mount Lure, located in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department, stands out from the line of high peaks of the Southern Alps. Solitary, it dominates the Forcalquier region, the east of the Luberon, and part of the Haute-Provence that Jean Giono holds dear. Mount Lure, which is classified by UNESCO as a biosphere reserve, is also a great playground for nature activity enthusiasts.

An exceptional natural area

As an emblematic peak of the Pre-Alps of Haute-Provence with aheight of 1825 meters, Mount Lure belongs to the same geological formation as the Albion plateau and the famous Mont Ventoux. Subject to alpine and Mediterranean influences, it hosts a unique fauna and flora and a great diversity of landscapes.

Entomologists can observe many important insect species on this classified and protected site. Butterflies thrive in large numbers, and there are populations of blackthorn, woolly, wild thyme, azure, and bumblebee moth. Grasshoppers and crickets are also very present in the area, as well as beetles (ground beetles, longhorns, etc.).

Hikers can also admire red deer, chamois, roe deer, and even wolves. Reptiles, including the Orsini's viper, also thrive in clearings, meadows, and alpine grasslands."
