The loop-shaped walk through the dunes and along the beach starts at the parking lot near the Fort of Leffinckoucke (Chemin du Fort, 59495 Leffrinckoucke, Hauts-de-France, France).
The Fort des Dunes was built in 1878 as part of a new defensive plan to secure the northern and eastern borders of France. The impressive and nearly intact polygonal fort can be visited.
First, we walk through the Dunes Dewulf, a large dune complex of 300 hectares between Leffrinckoucke and Zuydtcoote.
In front of the Maritime Hospital, we step towards the sea and follow the beach to the left in the direction of Leffrinckoucke. We see remnants of a coastal battery and (at low tide) a shipwreck from a boat that participated in Operation Dynamo at the end of May to early June 1940 (during which Allied troops were evacuated en masse to England).
