Montauban (Occitan: Montalban) is a municipality in the French department of Tarn-et-Garonne in the Occitanie region. It is the prefecture of the department and, with 64,048 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2025), also the largest city.

The city is located on the Tarn river and was founded in 1144 as a bastide. Before the French Revolution, Montauban was one of the largest and most important cities in the southwest of France. It was the seat of a diocese and became a stronghold of the Huguenots after the Reformation. The contrast between Catholics and Protestants was defining for Montauban. In modern times, the city did not experience the growth that similar cities in France did; only at the end of the twentieth century did Montauban become a growth pole.

Montauban is the city of painter Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres and sculptor Antoine Bourdelle. The Musée Ingres Bourdelle is located in the former episcopal palace from the seventeenth century. Other sights worth seeing are the cathedral Notre-Dame, the church of Saint-Jacques, and the Place Nationale, the main square with arcade-built houses.
