In 1871, with the annexation of Alsace and Moselle, the Germans decided to defend Metz. They completed the forts started by the French, then built a series of forts creating a fortified belt around the city. Starting in 1899, they began the construction of a second belt of forts called Festen (renamed Fortified Groups by the French after 1918). This route runs alongside, to the north, the Fortified Groups of Aisne and Yser, then makes a large loop through the villages located to the south of these military works.
