After the Battle of Guise at the end of August 1914, the northern part of the Aisne department is invaded by the German army. The inhabitants of the many occupied areas live a different war than that endured by the inhabitants of free France. For the residents of the villages of Gouy and Le Catelet, located between Cambrai and Saint-Quentin, where the Escaut River takes its source, terror reigns. Any means of communication with the rest of the country is prohibited. The occupied territories are directly allocated to feed the Reich's troops and are considered maneuver reserves. Daily life is particularly difficult.
