Day 4 Normandy

Your day begins with a bike ride through the wetland landscape, land that has been reclaimed from the sea, transformed into meadows to give Isigny and Carentan the reputation for top-quality butter and camembert cheese. The area is very flat and has many ditches/streams. The bike ride through the area is very easy and enjoyable. Along Utah Beach, you will reach Sainte-Mère-Eglise from where you will cycle back to Carentan.

Utah Beach was the code name for the westernmost landing beach, on the Cotentin Peninsula between the villages of Pouppeville and La Madeleine. Countless American soldiers lost their lives here. In tribute to the American casualties, several monuments have been erected here. Especially near the Musée du Débarquement (also known as the Utah Beach Landing Museum), you can pause at awe-inspiring monuments. The museum itself is dedicated to the reconstruction of D-Day, the first day of the landings in Normandy. Using film footage and displayed military equipment and vehicles, you get a picture of the course of this hellish day. During the landings in Normandy, the occupied area was also bombarded from the air. If you want to follow the operations of the American paratroopers during the landings in detail, head to the village of Sainte-Mère-Église. Here you will find numerous information boards that explain the actions of the airborne troops.
