At the Battle of Verdun, from February 21 to December 19, 1916, 700,000 French and German youngsters lost their lives. They are all buried in the mass cemeteries and "ossuaires nationales" of the Verdun region. Around the city, 9 villages were destroyed and never rebuilt. The frontline area had become uninhabitable and was given back to nature. This walking route passes through that forest, past two of the villages where the battle was fiercest, and through a chain of forts, trenches, burial places, bunkers and war memorials.
