This was the home of the "legendary Ottoline Morrell", who held court from 1915 to 1924. She was friends with an array of artists, writers and intellectuals such as D. H. Lawrence, T. S. Eliot, E. M. Forster, Bertrand Russell, Aldous Huxley, Virginia Woolf and Siegfried Sassoon. Morrell was known to have had many lovers. Morrell had a long affair with philosopher Bertrand Russell, with whom she exchanged more than 3,500 letters. Her lovers may have included the painters Augustus John and Henry Lamb, the artist Dora Carrington, and the art historian Roger Fry. In her later years she had a brief affair with a gardener, Lionel Gomme, who was employed at Garsington. That affair might have given the writer D. H. Lawrence inspiration for his novel Lady Chatterley's Lover, also known from the Netflix movie with the same name.
