Did you know that the effects of the eruption of the Krakatoa in Indonesia in 1883 could be seen here in the Ribble Valley. We know this because the poet Gerard Manley Hopkins created a lyrical description of the volcanic skyscapes over the Ribbel Valley in January 1884. These skyscapes were so beautiful due to the dust in the sky caused by the eruption of the Krakatoa at the other side of the world.
