Long Meg Stone Circle

Long Meg and Her Daughters is one of the larger stone circles in Great Britain. The largest stone of the circle, Long Meg, is over 3½ meters tall and stands just outside the circle. The stone circle dates back to the Bronze Age and is dated to around 1500 BC. Today, the stone circle consists of 59 stones of which 27 still stand upright, but it is believed that the original circle consisted of 70 stones.

According to tradition, Long Meg and her daughters were witches who were turned to stone by the Scottish wizard (or a Saint) Michael Scot in the 13th century. According to the same legend, the spell is broken if you can count the correct number of stones. If you arrive at the correct number twice, the spell is broken.
