This is a lively area of London, where cinemas and restaurants abound. It usually has a good vibe and some nightlife.
Trafalgar Square, frequented by both tourists and pigeons, features the column of
Nelson, in memory of the Battle of Trafalgar, where this admiral defeated a much stronger but poorly led Hispano-French fleet.
Dominating this irregular square is the building of the National Gallery, and on one corner appears the
church of St Martin-in-the-Fields, an excellent neoclassical work by James Gibbs.
There are some interesting points in the surroundings, such as Chinatown, with Eastern restaurants and shops
or the Admiralty Arch, from the early 20th century.
Soho, Bloomsbury
Near Trafalgar Square lies the popular Soho, a neighborhood of French origin, initially fueled
by the emigrations of Huguenots and later by counter-revolutionaries and monarchists.
It has nothing special, except for a legend of mystery and hidden life. In reality, it is a multi-ethnic area with a half provincial, half uprooted air. Mozart or Marx lived here. More than party halls and literary spots, travelers will find various kinds of restaurants, rundown cabarets, and cafes of average or little prestige.
Bloomsbury, a bit further north, is a different area, university-focused, with student residences and museum centers. The British Museum reigns in this part of London.
