Shieldaig stretches like a long ribbon along Loch Torridon, which runs deep inland. In 1893 the clergyman of Shieldaig left the Church of Scotland to join the dissenting clergyman of Raasay. He was the founder of the Free Presbyterian Church. Along the coast, in the Isle of Skye and in the Inner Hebrides, this Church still has many followers, called FreeWees.
