On the King's Lynn waterfront, at Purfleet Quay, stands a striking bronze statue of Captain George Vancouver, the famous explorer after whom the city of Vancouver and Vancouver Island are named.
The sculpture, created by artist Penelope Reeve and unveiled around 2000–2001, depicts Vancouver as a naval officer, with a telescope in one hand and a roll of maps in the other.
He looks out over the River Great Ouse, precisely where the maritime history of King's Lynn is tangibly present.
On the pedestal is an extensive inscription summarizing his life: born in King's Lynn in 1757, died in Petersham in 1798, and renowned as “a great navigator & surveyor”.
The text serves as a reminder of how, between 1791 and 1795, he accurately mapped thousands of kilometers of coastline of the Northwest Pacific Ocean, from San Diego to Anchorage.
A special detail: the stone plinth is made of natural stone from the Pacific West Coast of Canada, as a symbolic bridge between his English birthplace and the region he made famous.
Thus, the George Vancouver Statue is simultaneously a local tribute and an international symbol of exploration and connection.
