Overlooking the Irish Sea, Northern Ireland’s highest peak stands 850m high, and is supreme viewpoint on a clear day. No wonder it exerts a magnetic power over hillwalkers from near and far.

Starting from the edge of Newcastle town, this well-defined trail makes an out-and-back ascent of the peak via the Glen River Track. It begins by weaving through the thick deciduous woodland of Donard Forest, crossing several bridges over the tumbling waters of the Glen River. After emerging from the trees, the climb continues across open mountainside, with a rough stone path carrying you to the unmistakable landmark of the Mourne Wall. Turn left here, and follow this 100-year-old granite construction up the final, steep slope to the summit.

The views are worth the effort: a fantastic vista spans the Mourne Mountains, with Lough Neagh, the Wicklow Mountains and even Scotland visible across the sea on a fine day.

To descend, simply reverse your outward journey.
