Start and finish at Castlewellan Forest Park (£5 parking fee, note closing time). Despite its modest height of 272m, Slievenaslat is an exceptional viewpoint. At the top, you’ll be rewarded with a sweeping panorama of the Mourne Mountains, which could potentially be snow-capped in winter. Enjoy birds-eye views of Castlewellan Castle, lake and gardens too. Yellow waymarkers will get you there. discovernorthernireland.com

Afters: With its carved wooden staircases, stained-glass ceiling and snug seats, Maginns Bar in Castlewellan is the perfect place to dine and drink. It’s got live music too; maginnsbar.com
