Linking the urban centres of Belfast and Lisburn, Lagan Valley Regional Park is a surprisingly natural corridor of greenery that extends for 18km along the River Lagan. Running alongside the waterway is an historic towpath, which was the preserve of barge horses in the 1700s, but today offers a ecological escape for walkers and cyclists.

This circuit between Lockview Road and the Lock Keeper’s Cottage offers a perfect taste of the longer towpath. From the start, follow a paved footpath south, soon joining the river beside a weir. Continue to the second bridge, just beyond the 1 mile post. Cross this wooden bridge into Belvoir Forest Park, then turn right onto a gravel path that meanders through the forest. Turn right at a junction and descend back to a stretch of canal, arriving beside two locks and the restored Lock Keeper’s Cottage, which dates from 1827.  

Cross the canal and turn right, then cross Red Bridge and rejoin the main river towpath. Follow the wooded bank and peaceful water back to the start.

To make a one-way outing along the entire towpath to Lisburn, use the train to get back to the start
