The top map of Methoni dates from the second half of the 17th century. You can already see some habitation outside the walls of the walled city, but the ridge where most of Methoni is now built was still almost empty. The occupation of that area only came just after the Greek revolution in the first half of the 19th century. Then some French engineers drew up the first urban plan for a city in the new Greek state: the modern Methoni. That plan dates from 1829. I The plan also received the signature of Kapodistrias, the first leader of Greece, for approval.
