Penteliko mountain or Penteli mountain dominates the region north-east of Athens and Maroussi being 1.109m high. The rock that builds up the mountain is mainly marble and limestone. The marble was used since antiquity.
When that type of rock weathers over the years, it becomes deep red clay which is deposited at the footslopes of the mountain. When it accumulates in pockets, pottery-activity is associated with these areas. A typical example is the pottery activity of Marousi.
