Xerolagado means "dry fields". It's a typical dry valley in the limestone/marble area of Sifnos. The limestone/marble area has a very poor vegetation. It is in general very bare, with a few typical shrubs. Because of the many cracks in the limestone, it is very dry land. And when the limestone weathers, it only produces a very limited red clayey soil. Only with great effort could the farmers make some terrasses to collect some soil along the dry rivers and thalwegs as you can see in this valley of Xerolagado along the way from Apollonia to Cheronisos.
