The construction of the Dam of Marathon is linked to a major historical event in Greece: the Greek deportation of Asia Minor at the end of the Greco-Turkish War (1919–1922). The rapid population increase in the Athens area following the huge influx of refugees from Asia Minor caused a huge increase in water demand. The construction of the dam lasted from 1926 to 1929.
