The book Zorba the Greek by Nikos Kazantzakis is set on the Greek island of Crete. Both the novel and the famous 1964 film adaptation are set on this island, where the protagonist, Basil, wants to operate a coal mine and receives help from Alexis Zorba.
The filming actually took place in Crete, including in the village of Kokkino Chorio and on the beach of Stavros on the northern coast of the Akrotiri peninsula.
