The mask of Agamemnon was discovered in 1876 by Heinrich Schliemann in Grave Circle A in Mycenae, a group of six shaft graves within the citadel. These graves contained several high-quality gold objects, including five other death masks. The mask was found to date to about 1600 BC, over 300 years older than the supposed time of Agamemnon (around 1200 BC). Schliemann incorrectly named it after the Homeric king, likely to dramatize his discovery. It worked, as we still refer to it as the Mask of Agamemnon.
