La máscara de Agamemnón fue descubierta en 1876 por Heinrich Schliemann en la Ciruela de Tumbas A en Micenas, un grupo de seis tumbas de pozo dentro de la ciudadela. Estas tumbas contenían varios objetos de oro de alta calidad, incluyendo cinco otras máscaras funerarias. La máscara resultó datar alrededor de 1600 a.C., más de 300 años más antigua que el supuesto tiempo de Agamemnón (alrededor de 1200 a.C.). Schliemann la nombró erróneamente en honor al rey homérico, probablemente para dramatizar su descubrimiento. Funcionó, pues todavía la llamamos la Máscara de Agamemnón.
