About a hundred years ago, the Parenzana railway route from Porec to Trieste was built.
At the time, the train had a speed of about 25 km per hour and it took 6 to 7 hours to cover the entire 123 km route.
It connected the three countries and provided transportation of goods and people. It was operational from 1902 to 1935 .
After that, road transport became cheaper and train traffic was stopped.
From 1996 they started to make parts as a walking/cycling route . Today it is a beautiful route along the most beautiful places in these three countries . The lowest point of the route is only 2m above sea level and the highest point is 293m above sea level. The route has more than 600 curves, 9 tunnels, 11 bridges and 6 viaducts.
