With precipitous slopes turning abruptly to a flat, table-top summit, Benbulben mountain is one of Connacht’s most distinctive landmarks. It dominates the southeast corner of Sligo Bay, giving wonderful views over the coast and countryside.

While the summit is the preserve of experienced hillwalkers, recreational visitors can explore the western foot of the mountain, in Gortarowey Forest. There are three designated walking trails here, the longest of which is the 5.5km Benbulben Walk, signed by red waymarks.

On this woodland circuit, gaps in the trees are alternately filled by close-up views of Benbulben’s gulley-riven slopes, and the Atlantic Ocean. An old cashel – an ancient fortified dwelling – adds historic interest too.
