Despite a relatively modest height of 445m, Diamond Hill has all the character of a much bigger mountain. Its steep summit slopes narrow to a lofty fin of quartzite 500m long, with simply stupendous views in all directions.

The peak lies entirely within the boundaries of Connemara National Park, and has the advantage of starting and finishing at a visitor centre with all the normal visitor facilities. For the best walk, combine both the blue Lower Diamond Hill trail with the red upper loop. This gives a figure-eight circuit that explores the entirety of the mountain.

The lower section climbs gently, with a gravel path interspersed by stretches of wooden boardwalk. The gradient increases as you continue onto the upper loop and approach the summit slopes. Climb a flight of steep flagstone steps, then negotiate a cluster of quartzite outcrops. From the summit cairn, the sensational views encompass Kylemore Abbey, the Twelve Ben mountains and the intricate Connemara coastline.

The descent brings you across the southern side of the mountain, back to the lower loop and visitor centre.
