Rising into the Dublin Hills from the southern side of Ireland’s capital city, Ticknock Forest is a playground for hikers and bikers who want quick access to mountain terrain. The reward is an unbeatable panorama that extends across the city and coastline all the way to the high peaks of Wicklow, with some characterful formations and landmarks along the way.

Two long-distance hiking routes pass through this area: both the Dublin Mountains Way and the Wicklow Way. Most of the forest walks make use of these longer trails in some form. The best way to see it all is by following the signed Fairy Castle Loop.  

From the car park, zig-zag uphill along forest roads and trails. You emerge from the trees and get your first big views at the summit of Three Rock Mountain, which is marked by a formation of granite boulders. Continue climbing across open mountainside to reach Two Rock Mountain (536m), where the best views extend south. You then descend back into the trees, and follow forest paths back to the car park.

Don’t Miss

The large stone cairn at the summit of Two Rock Mountain. This is known as Fairy Castle, and archaeologists believe it holds a Neolithic passage tomb.

Practical Information

Wear boots and bring a coat; the upper slopes are mountainous in nature

Watch out for mountain bikers in the forest. There are separate trails for hikers and bikers, but you may encounter each other in places.
