Metaponto is best known for the ruins of the ancient Greek city of Metapontum. This city was also the place where most of the followers of Pythagoras were hiding. Pythagoras did much more than practising mathematics. He also created a brotherhood based on his philosophy. The brotherhood got into politics but that ended badly. They ruled most of Sicily at that time. The people were fed up with their approach and they faced rebellion. The members of the brotherhood fled and took refuge in Metaponto. Here, most of them died after the city was besieged and burned. The story is that Philolaos, member of the brotherhood, fled and saved the sacred book of Pythagoras. Eventually, the books ended up in Plato's hands.
