For centuries, the Bargello was the palace of the Capitano di Giustizia, with prisons, interrogation rooms, and places for executions and hangings.
In 1505, Frosino di Bartolo and two accomplices were hanged from the windows here for the rape of a poor man's wife; that is a well-documented historical fact.
Political opponents (such as Baccio Valori and his supporters in 1537) were also beheaded in the courtyard.
