The Piazza Napoleon is a large square in the historic center of Lucca. The Piazza Napoleon, also known as Piazza Grande, was established in the early nineteenth century. On the site of the square, there used to be a medieval fort. The square was built at the request of Napoleon's sister. Originally, a large statue of Napoleon was planned for the square, but this was never realized. However, there is a statue of Maria Luisa of Bourbon. Alongside the square, the Palazzo Ducale was built.
Today, the Piazza Napoleon is a car-free square where markets and events are regularly held. The Lucca Summer Festival takes place in the Piazza Napoleon every year.
