Named "San Martino in Guazzolongo" (after the district's original name) since 1067, the church was originally the seat of the Augustinian canons.
The church has a simple quadrangular plan. Two chapels have been built on the right side of the nave, while on the right side of the church, where the remains of the original bell tower can be seen, a 16th-century portico has been built.
The marble facade has a copy of the bas-relief Saint Martin and the Beggar that can be attributed to Andrea Pisano on the portal.
In the interior (renovated in the 17th century) is a wooden paneled crucifix by the Pisan painter Enrico di Tedice (mid-13th century); in the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament are 14th-century frescoes by Giovanni di Nicola and Cecco di Pietro (chapel vault, part Savior and Saints). On the walls hang two stories of the Virgin by Antonio Veneziano.
Restored in the early 17th century, the altars contain a series of paintings by important artists, including Palma il Giovane, Orazio Riminaldi, Jacopo Ligozzi, de Passignano and de Melani. After a recent restoration, fragments of frescoes were found under some of the altarpieces. On the walls are some sculptures by Civitali, the Vaccà and the funerary monument of Marquis Francesco Del Testa by Giovanni Antonio Cybei with a beautiful marble portrait of the deceased (1780).
The remains of the Pisan saint Bona have been preserved inside.
