In the center of the square is a white marble monument dedicated to Ferdinando I de' Medici. The statue, made by Pietro Francavilla to a design by Giambologna, was initially placed next to the "spallette" of the Lungarno, but was moved to its present location after the redevelopment of the banks in 1872. In front of this statue, until 1595, stood a statue dedicated to Rodolfo Orlandi, consul and hero of the Republic (called The Giant by the Pisans of the time).
At the end of the square are some old 16th century palazzi, seats of institutions: the Ricci college, the Mazzarosa palace, the Ernesto Rossi theatre, and the 18th century Pellegrino palace, seat of the Intendenza di Finanza. On the left, the apsidal part of the Church of San Nicola, whose facade faces Via Santa Maria.
There is now a large pay car park on the square.
