The Oratory of San Cristoforo is located at the corner of Via Ricciarelli and Via Franceschini in Volterra, Tuscany.
It houses a fresco of the Madonna and Child, attributed to Mariotto di Andrea from Volterra (15th century), an object of great veneration.
The oratory also owes its name to the characteristic square in front of it.
San Cristoforo is a saint in the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Churches. He is regarded as an important saint who was and is venerated in many countries and periods. His name day is July 24 (before the Second Vatican Council his name day was July 25, but because that is also the name day of the apostle James, Saint Christopher was moved one day). In 1969, however, he was removed from the Calendar of Saints by the Vatican.
