The Medici fortress of Volterra was built on the highest point of the hill on which the city is located: from the outside it looks truly majestic and imposing.
The structure consists of two buildings connected by high defensive walls: the Rocca Vecchia, also known as Cassero, built in 1342 by the Duke of Athens Gualtieri VI of Brienne, governor of Florence and modified by Lorenzo the Magnificent, and the Rocca Nuova, known as Il Mastio, built by Lorenzo the Magnificent himself between 1472 and 1474.
Today, the building is used as a medium-security state prison, which is not accessible and cannot be visited.
