The church was medieval, but was destroyed during the last world war and later rebuilt in Romanesque Revival style by the Sienese architect Menotti Lucattelli.
Inside is a free-standing fresco of the Madonna and Child by the early 15th-century painter Maestro di Signa; also noteworthy is a fine polychrome wooden statue of Saint Barnabas by a mid-15th century sculptor, possibly Florentine. In addition, the body of Saint Faustus the Martyr is housed in a shrine, which was donated to the church by a wealthy Sienese family. From that time Saint Faustus became the protector of the Chianti and the faithful called in his help during drought or during the grape harvest.
