Elevation Gain: approx. 4100 m 🏔️
Surface: Quality Italian mountain asphalt, with extremely steep and technical sections 🏎️
Condition: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (Outside category! 4100 meters of elevation gain over 146 kilometers requires exceptional condition and granite-like climbing legs)

🗺️ Route Description
We start our epic journey in Costermano sul Garda. To warm up our legs slowly, we descend to the lake and roll through Garda and Bardolino along the rippling water. 🌊 Through Affi, Camporengo, and Ponton, we head inland. Before long, we find ourselves in the beautiful, rolling wine region of Valpolicella. We cross Sant'Ambrogio di Valpolicella, San Pietro in Cariano, and Fumane 🍇.
From Fumane, the fun on the flat is officially over. We start the long climb to Breonio, continuing upwards via Fosse and Provalo to the summit of the grueling Passo Fittanze della Sega (Erbezzo) 📈. After passing through Fagioli, a crucial moment follows: the descent to Avio. Notice: this descent is dangerously steep and extremely technical! ⚠️ Hold on to the brakes tightly and take no unnecessary risks.
Once safely in the valley of the Adige River, the focal point of this queen stage begins: the indomitable ascent of the eastern flank of the Monte Baldo massif. We climb for hours via the spectacular Bocca del Creer / Rifugio Graziani ⛰️. Along the way, we pass the idyllic dam lake Lago Pra da Stua and ride through the stunning nature of Riserva Naturale Corna Piana via San-Valentino.
Through Bes and Bocca di Navene, we literally and figuratively reach the highlight of the day: the slopes of Monte Baldo, where the view of the Lake Garda far below us is priceless. 🦅
What follows is the ultimate reward: a kilometers-long, magnificent descent back to civilization. We whizz down through Novezza, Ferrara di Monte Baldo, and Spiazzi (known for the Madonna della Corona). We squeeze through the last kilometers via Maso, Vezzane, and Caprino Veronese to finally return to Costermano sul Garda with completely exhausted legs, but a heart full of pride. 🏁
✨ Highlights
🍷 The Valpolicella Valley: A delightful, rolling intermezzo through one of the most prestigious wine regions in Italy.
⛰️ Passo Fittanze della Sega: The least brutal side of this climb but descending along the brutal side confronts you directly with the harsh reality of this queen stage.
🌲 Riserva Naturale Corna Piana: Pure, unspoiled mountain nature during the grueling climb to the top of Monte Baldo.
🦅 View from Bocca di Navene: The magical contrast between the rugged mountain peaks and the blue depths of Lake Garda.
💡 Tips for the Road
Check your brakes! The descent towards Avio is notorious and dangerously steep. Make sure your brake pads are in top condition and brake pumpingly to prevent overheating. 🛑
Climbing Gear: With 4100 meters of elevation, a light gear is vital. Ensure at least a 34 in front and a 32 or 34 in the back to survive the extremely steep sections. ⚙️
Clothing for High Mountain: It may be 30 degrees at the bottom of Lake Garda, but at the top of Monte Baldo (over 1600 meters), the wind can feel icy cold. A good windbreaker for the long descent is essential. 🧥
Fuel: You will burn an astronomical number of calories today. Eat systematically from kilometer one and refill your bottles at every village fountain (acqua potabile) you encounter. 🍌💧
Conclusion
This is not just a ride, this is a pilgrimage for cyclists. 146 kilometers and 4100 meters of elevation command the utmost respect. It’s a journey that physically pushes you to your limits, but mentally rewards you with panoramas and achievements that stay with you for the rest of your life. Once you step off your bike in Costermano sul Garda again, you can rightfully call yourself a king of the mountains. You just earned that gigantic pizza and that ice-cold Aperol Spritz on the terrace by the lake double and thorough. Bravissimo! 🥂🍕
