The Chapultepec Castle, where the National Museum of History is located, located at the top of Cerro de Chapultepec. Its rooms allow you to know the historical events that have marked the history of Mexico, as well as the daily life of its main protagonists, such as emperors and presidents. The History Gallery (also called the Caracol Museum for its spiral shape), is dedicated to young people, to know in the form of images the construction of Mexico as an independent nation until the end of the Revolution.
The complex as it can be seen today keeps vestiges of its use as a military college. On September 13, 1847, this school was defended by the cadets "boy heroes" against the invasion of the Americans. His heroic but deadly act is symbolized by the columns at the entrance to the park. Later it functioned as the imperial residence of Maximilian and Charlotte, the noble couple of Austrian-Belgian descent, who came to administer the country after the French intervention, under the pretext of compensating for a moratorium on foreign debts. The emperors enlarged it and adapted it to its new use in 1864, giving it a more modern image in neoclassical style, which contrasted with the baroque used previously. The Alcázar stands out, which houses objects and furniture that have belonged to the emperors. As for the architecture, look at the elegant keep, the gardens with "living room arrangement" in the courtyard and the monumental staircase framed by lions.
Once the empire was defeated and after a short period of use as an astronomical observatory and military college (for the second time), Porfirio Díaz decided to use it again as an official residence. He redecorated several salons in a luxurious French style. Consecutive presidents made use of the castle until 1939, when President Lázaro Cárdenas decided to make it one of the first museums in Mexico, and the official residence was changed to Los Pinos (also within the Chapultepec area).
