In 1774, Friesland feared the end of times due to a prediction that the earth would be thrown out of its orbit. When a conjunction of the moon and the planets Mercury, Venus, Mars, and Jupiter was to occur, Pastor Eelko Alta from Bozum published a booklet in which he predicted that these celestial bodies would collide on May 8, 1774. As soon as four planets and the moon align, the combined gravitational pull will throw the earth out of its orbit and burn it in the sun. This prediction caused great panic in Friesland. Businessman Eise Eisinga calculated that this could not happen and built, as a true Enlightenment thinker, a planetarium in his home in Franeker so that everyone could see for themselves how the solar system works, a task that would take him seven years.
